I pondered this question and came up with a new habit that I would follow.
A random video of a young man who had asked himself a similar question popped up on my Instagram.
He often went to bed very late at night, and then he would have to get up very early the next day to go to work. This affected his productivity and mood throughout the day. After getting home in the evening, he would be tired and lacked willpower to get anything productive done and would go to bed late again.
This repeated cycle was hurting him.
His answer to the above question was to create a habit of going to bed early which would result in him having more energy and willpower the next day.
Unfortunately, the video was very short, and he did not share his results, but this question left me intrigued.
Was there any simple habit I could create that would also lead to positive benefits in other areas?
In my last article, I wrote about how I had made a lot of positive improvement by attacking my hesitations and fears. I was becoming more productive and feeling my self-confidence rise.
But, I felt that there was still lots of room for improvement, so I really started thinking about the question. I wanted to find a habit that I could follow that would also positively affect other areas of my life.
I, too, was sometimes caught in a cycle of going to bed late which also affected my productivity in the mornings. I could also go to bed early, but I had failed to do this in the past because I often ended up working late, and it had been hard to settle into a good routine, so it didn’t go well.
I considered many different ideas, but I finally decided on one new routine that I would attempt to turn into a habit.
The Habit I Chose to Create
I would decide the time I would go to bed, and in the one hour before that time, I would not look at my PC, phone, or TV. I allowed myself to do things like read a book or write.
I knew it wouldn’t be easy as I always looked at my phone after getting into bed. This always led to me staying up much longer than I wanted.
The first night I tried it, I found myself at a loss of what to do as I was so used to looking at my phone. I finally grabbed an old book off the shelf and started reading it. After a few pages, I put it down and went to sleep. I ended up waking up very early in the morning and went to the coffee shop to write. It turned into a very productive morning.
In just one day, it had already had a positive effect.
I haven’t yet finished the 30 days, but when I do, I will write an update to this story and let you know the ultimate outcome and impact it had on me.
A Challenge for You
I challenge you to come up with your own habit and share what you will do in the comments below for accountability.
What is one habit that you could implement and follow for 30 days that would lead to other positive outcomes in your life?
Think carefully about this and think about you and your situation. For all of us, there are simple things we can do, that if done consistently, will help improve our lives.
Some Ideas:
- Go to bed early
- Only eat within an 8-hour window
- No phone in the mornings or before bed
- Meditate
- Journal
- Avoidance of disempowering habits: no porn, no snacks, no alcohol, no complaining
- Daily Exercise
- Going for a walk or run first thing in the morning and getting sunlight.
- Reading a positive book every morning for 30 minutes.
- Learn and practice something 30 minutes a day: language, programming, AI, writing, healthy cooking, etc.
- Give real praise to 5 people a day.
- Say 5 things positive to yourself as you smile in the mirror to start your morning
You might be attempted to choose several, but just choose one to focus on as it will be easier to follow.
For accountability, write it down in the comments below and let others know. I will respond to each challenge and I will be cheering for you to succeed!
After 30 days, come back and let us know how you did and if it led to better outcomes. Better yet, write an article about it on Medium and share the link in the comments.
I am looking forward to hearing from you!
